Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings present Saun & Starr aka the Dapettes on Daptone Records.

Screen Shot 2014-02-28 at 12.40.25 PM-500x500

At first listen to “Hot Shots”, it’s obviously a genuine piece of music from the era of soul. When Saun & Starr’s voices hit your ears, it’s just confirmation. Actually, Saun & Starr are the Dapettes, the unfailing voices backing Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings.

Giving away a copy of the brand new 7″ of “Hot Shot” on Beat Swap Meet Radio podcast at http://www.soundcloud.com/beat-swap-meet-radio
Get your name placed into the raffle by listening to the show.

On September 1st, the world’s only travelling record swap will be in Oakland during Hiero Day.  That’s right. Beat Swap Meet Bay Area will be held at Hiero Day.

For those who don’t know, the city of Oakland closes down streets in the city to accomodate for this “day to celebrate independent hip-hop collective Hieroglyphics & Independent Music Everywhere!”

Beat Swap Meet is honored to be collaborating with one of our favorite and well-respected groups in Hip Hop music. Was also flattered to get a drop from “Tajai of the mighty Souls of Mischief crew” on last week’s Beat Swap Meet Radio podcast. Listen at http://soundcloud.com/beat-swap-meet-radio

Performances by such purveyors of dopeness as: Goapele, Zion I & The Grouch & Eligh, Fashawn, Mystik Journeymen, Mistah FAB, etc., and not to mention a performance by the gracious hosts: Hieroglyphics themselves.

Go dig for audio gold in the pacific northwest this weekend with Discogs.

The 80′s “Prophet of Soul” Howard Johnson keeps it movin. You know him for his classic boogie record “So Fine”.

VLUU L200 / Samsung L200

Since the first album featured on his discography: Niteflyte 1 in 1979, to being Vice President & Production Coordinator of Lifestyle Records with Dana Dane and Battlecat, and a load of other achievements, Howard Johnson hasn’t slowed down yet. With his most recent release Jet Black Cassanova in 2013, HoJo still tours with the best of em.

Catch him at the Funk Freaks’ I Am The Funk Tour this Thursday – Sunday.

Got beats?  Do you love rocking the mpc or sp1200?  Are you an analog girl in a digital world?  Do have a passion for music?  Of course you do.  One things that separates the Beat Swap Meet from other record shows is the producer showcase.  We’ve been blessed to have such artists as Thes One, Shafiq Husayn, Ayatolla, Dibia$e, Cazal Organism, and many others.  The other thing that makes the producer showcase unique compared to others is the fact that it is all hardware no software.  Old school son.  We are looking for the next generation of producers to participate in our producer showcase.  Kids still make beats right?  They know you can make music without a laptop right?  We have no idea.  There are a whole new generation of DJs so naturally there has to be a whole new generation of producers.  If you produce music and are 21 and under we have one spot available for the next producer showcase at the upcoming Beat Swap Meet on Sept 14th.  Send your music to dj671@beatswapmeet.com.  Beats must be submitted by September 3rd.

Answer: The National formed in Cincinatti, OH and relocated to Brooklyn. Reflection Eternal member Hi-Tek is from the Natti and Talib Kweli is from Brooklyn of course.

You will also catch indie rock Brooklynatti residents at the First City Festival along with a huge lineup this weekend.

Feeling this song right here. “Graceless” Here’s the music video

beck-morning-phase11
With the release of Morning Phase, it’s clear to see Beck as one of LA’s great contemporary singer-songwriters. Hear Beck talking about Morning Phase on NPR’s “All Songs Considered” http://www.npr.org/blogs/allsongs/2014/02/04/268981803/beck-on-morning-phase-the-all-songs-considered-interview Beck first hit the MTV generation in the 90′s with an obvious affinity for Hip Hop. “Where It’s At” made that pretty clear. Beck had “two turntables and a microphone” so I, personally, was ready to listen. Ever since then, I’ve always respected Beck’s musical versatility. Morning Phase continues his tradition of free reign on genre and still captivates early listeners. Here’s the new music video for “Heart Is A Drum” off Morning Phase:

Beck will be headlining First City Festival this weekend… Performance art to commence.
