K-Maxx “SupaDrunk/Love is Comin’”(2012) Sweater Funk/Sound Boutique

If you’re a vinyl fiend like I am then you’ll definately pay respects to the strictly records only DJ family, Sweater Funk. This San Franciscan treat of boogie spinning, funk and soul grooving sound providers brings a focus of light into the musical skies of mainstream laptop darkness.
Their no ego, record purity, and fun-loving attitudes shine through with their second 45 release, “SupaDrunk” by future funk artist, Ken Hopkins, better known as K-Maxx. Well known as a radio DJ for KPOO, 89.5’s “Ghetto Gumbo”, This multi-faceted musician, producer, singer and songwriter authentically blended the sounds of 80’s boogie synths and smooth throwback vocals which took me back to house parties and good times celebrations when music making was less pretentious. The lyrical content compares the feelings of attraction and drunkenness as one and if you ever through a few back I’m sure you would agree. K-Maxx fuses a soulful tone and even a rhyming segment to pull listeners into an ecstatic party vibe filled to the brim with keyboard arrangements and mellow dance evoking rhythms.
Also worth noting is the b-side to the 45, “Love is Comin’.” This smoother more R & B funk ditty brought to mind tracks by Cameo especially with the vocal stylings meshed with keyboard heavy chords. The lyrics express when one gets hit by love’s bite even bringing the words, “Cupid did his thing” into conversation.
Overall, if you are looking to expand your horizons with Neo Boogie funk, then this 45 should be next on your list. Shout out to all the winners of these past 2 Dirtstyle Vinyl Challenge’s: FLIP FLOP (master class LA), IQ (cut to cut LA), TRAPS (master class Bay Area) & MR. VIBE (cut to cut Bay Area). First in LA and then again in the Bay, the Dirtstyle Vinyl Challenge was one for the books! DJ’s traveled out from Seattle, Arizona, and of course from all over California. It felt good to see so many still battle hungry.

The scratch community will always be a detrimental roll to the Beat Swap Meet function. Thank You and Respect to DJ Antriks for putting this battle together and approaching us with the idea.
